About Strings 'N' Steps

Originally founded as a collaborative artistic initiative, Strings ’N’ Steps emerged from a shared exploration of Indian classical dance and music, bringing together rhythmic movement and melodic expression in a unique creative dialogue. What began as a performance-driven collaboration gradually evolved into a structured academy dedicated to training, research, and performance in Indian classical and semi-classical arts. Rooted in tradition yet responsive to contemporary learning needs, Strings ’N’ Steps continues to grow as a platform that nurtures disciplined practice, artistic integrity, and cross-cultural exchange through both online and offline education.

Our students and faculty are regularly recognised and empanelled by prestigious cultural institutions, including the Ministry of Culture (Government of India), Sangeet Natak Akademi, Doordarshan (India’s National Television), All India Radio, Centre For Cultural Resources And Training (CCRT), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and renowned classical boards across India.

At Strings ‘N’ Steps, we don’t just teach – we nurture artistic journeys, helping learners evolve into confident performers, cultural ambassadors, and lifelong torchbearers of India’s creative legacy.

Our Story

From Duet to Legacy

Strings ‘N’ Steps began as a groundbreaking duet—Kathak’s percussive elegance intertwining with the lyrical strings of the Hawaiian guitar. Founded in 2011 by Sangeeta Majumder in artistic collaboration with Neel Ranjan Mukherjee, the project captured hearts and sparked conversations across continents.

Today, while continuing to evolve as a solo and collaborative initiative, Strings ‘N’ Steps remains dedicated to its founding vision: to inspire, train, and uplift a new generation of artists by blending classical depth with contemporary soul.

A Vision in Motion

A Vision in Motion

The seeds of Strings ‘N’ Steps were sown when two artists from distinct worlds—Kathak and Hawaiian guitar—came together to create a new artistic vocabulary. Their collaborative performances captivated audiences in India and abroad, offering a fresh yet soulfully grounded expression of Indian classical traditions. The harmony between ghungroos and strings not only resonated musically but also sparked a cultural dialogue.

As demand for their performances and workshops grew, Sangeeta Majumder envisioned a space that would nurture young artists, encourage innovation, and keep the classical arts alive in meaningful, contemporary ways.

The Academy: Nurturing the Next Generation

The Academy: Nurturing the Next Generation

With the blessings of sitar legend Pandit Debu Chaudhuri and tabla maestro Ustad Akram Khan, Strings ‘N’ Steps Academy was born in 2011. The academy quickly became a nurturing ground for aspiring dancers and musicians, offering training rooted in classical traditions while encouraging experimentation and fusion.

Our global vision was strengthened through international partnerships, including Canada-based Saaz-O-Awaaz Academy of Indian Music and S.O.A Tabla, establishing Strings ‘N’ Steps as a cross-cultural hub from the very beginning.
